세계 최고의 보험그룹 중의 하나인 AXA(악사)를 아시나요?


우리나라에서 자동차보험을 취급하는 정도로 알려진 AXA는 세계 최고의 보험그룹 중의 하나입니다. AUM(Asset Under Management)이 €1.103 trillion (2011); 2011년 기준으로 자산의 총 시장가치가 대략 1,616조 원입니다. 2012년 12월 말 기준 삼성생명의 총자산은 179조 원에 달합니다. 2012년 12월 기준으로 대략 AXA가 삼성생명의 자산규모에 비해 10배 의 자산규모를 갖고 있습니다. AXA는 세계 여러 나라에서 현지법인을 통해 법과 규제를 따르며 각각 독립적으로 사업을 영위하는 보험그룹입니다. AXA 그룹은 생명보험, 건강보험, 기타보험, 그리고 투자에 관한 업무 등을 하고 있습니다. AXA는 서유럽, 북아메리카, 아시아 태평양, 그리고 중동지역에서 왕성한 활동을 하고 있습니다.

History

AXA(악사)는 1817년에 앙시엔뮈티엘: the Ancienne Mutuelle(Mutuelle de L'assurance contre L'incendie)상호회사로 설립되었습니다. 그 후 1978년에 Parisienne de Garantie를 인수하여 뮈티엘유니(Mutuelles Unies)로 상호 변경. 1982년에 the Drouot Group을 사드려 Mutuelles Unies/Drouot가 됐습니다. 1985년부터 회사이름에 AXA를 붙여 사용하기 시작했습니다. 1991년에 미국에 업계 제3위인 에퀴터블컴퍼니(Equitable Companies lnc.)의 경영권 인수. 1996년에 Union des Assurances De Paris (UAP)를 인수하여 AXA-UAP가 되면서 프랑스 최대 보험사로 거듭납니다. 1999년 정식으로 회사명을 AXA로 변경했습니다. 1999년에 Guardian Royal Exchange 인수. 2000년 3월에 Sun Life & Provincial Holdings 인수. 2006년에 Credit Suisse에게 약 €9 billion을 지급하고 스위스의 대표 보험그룹인 Winterthur Group을 인수했습니다. 



The AXA name

"AXA"는 어떤 언어로 발음하더라도 쉽게 발음하기 위해 선택됐습니다. 1982년 Drouot Group을 인수하고 Claude Bébéar 회장은 새로운 이름을 만들기 위해 컨설턴트를 고용했습니다. Bébéar 회장은 어떤 언어로 불려도 짧고 간결하게 불리기 바랐고, 1985년 Bébéar 회장은 AXA라는 이름을 선택했습니다.

우리나라에도 보험사, 은행, 증권사, 그리고 자산운용사 등 많은 금융 기관이 있습니다. 그런데 세계적인 영업망을 갖고 이름을 떨치는 금융 기관은 아직 없습니다. 우리나라 금융기관이 국외에서 경쟁력이 부족한 것은 왜일까요?
